Looking for Leonardo

When the artist Verrocchio was commissioned to create a panel of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist for a sacred altar in 1478, did he delegate the curly-haired youth (left) and the turbaned guard (second from right) to his prize pupil, the 25-year-old Leonardo?
