1934: The Art of the New Deal

Of all the artworks underwritten by the government in 1934, none was a more vivid statement of American optimism that Oregon native Ray Strong's expansive Golden Gate Bridge, depicting early construction of the San Francisco Bay landmark, completed in 1937. Franklin Delano Roosevelt so admired the upbeat image, he hung the canvas in the White House.
