Keith Coleman

Shooting Stars: Albert Watson presents Keith Coleman

Keith has assisted me on and off for about 15 years. He is never happier than when he is working, which is something we have in common. Also like me, he isn’t that interested in the technical aspects of photography—those have to be mastered, but you become fluent with the technical so you can be free to work creatively. Keith has done that. Now he’s exploring his broad interest in the world and applying his creative vision. He loves people, and he can bring out unexpected qualities in them in a studio setting. His work is strange, provocative and challenging. The main thing that sets apart a competent photographer from a successful photographer is passion—almost an obsession with photography. Keith’s evolution as an artist comes from his true commitment, always challenging himself to go further. You can’t just float on the surface; you have to go deep. -- Albert Watson

Albert Watson was named one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time by Photo District News. An exhibition of his work will open at the Deichtorhallen Museum in Hamburg on September 14. Keith Coleman, 40, is based in New York City.
