4. Remembering the Horrors of Auschwitz

Steven Luckert, a curator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, describes how Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp during World War II, evolved from a prison to an execution center in just a few years. Holocaust survivors provide glimpses into what Luckert calls the “process of dehumanization” that prisoners at Auschwitz underwent, as their possessions were confiscated, their heads were shaved and arms tattooed and they were forced to live like animals in crowded barracks.
