2. What Did the Rebel Yell Sound Like?

“To most of us, perhaps, the men who fought the Civil War may seem like the inhabitants of a sort of cinematic prehistory, quaintly memorialized in Currier & Ives prints, old newspaper engravings and the photographs of Mathew Brady,” writes Fergus Bordewich on Smithsonian.com. But thousands of Civil War soldiers were interviewed, recorded and filmed up through the mid-20th century. In this remarkable clip from the 1930s, Confederate veterans “like living ghosts in the flesh” step up to a microphone and belt out their best rebel yell.
