Farmers Unite
President Andrew Johnson deploys Oliver Hudson Kelley, a Minnesota farmer turned United States Department of Agriculture employee, to assess the state of southern farms after the Civil War, and upon his return, he co-founds the Order of Patrons of Husbandry on December 4, 1867. The National Grange, as it is more commonly referred, is organized to improve the social and economic conditions of rural America and now has some 300,000 members in 3,600 communities in 37 states.
