Blackbeard Meets His Match
Famous English pirate Edward Teach, more popularly known as Blackbeard, the scourge of the Virginia and North Carolina coasts, is killed in Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina, after a battle with a Royal Navy ship led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard, who had been hired by Governor Spotswood of Virginia to kill the rogue. Blackbeard is beheaded, and crewmen hung after a trial in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1996, divers find the remains of a ship believed to be Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge in the waters of Beaufort Inlet.
