Thomas Nast, a staunch Republican partisan, first uses an elephant labeled "The Republican Vote" in a cartoon in Harper's Weekly. The elephant stands over a pit labeled "Chaos." Nast reprises the famous elephant throughout the 1874 state elections, drawing a series of cartoons in which the elephant descends further into the pit with each Democratic Party victory. Nast also sketches the Republican elephant locked in battle with the Democratic "Jackass," a figure first used associated with Andrew Jackson in 1837.
