Moon Unit Zappa Is, Like, Born
Moon Unit Zappa, daughter of rock star Frank Zappa, is born in New York City. In 1982 she becomes a celebrity for more than her name after she does a monologue mimicking "val-speak" on her father's hit single "Valley Girl." Val-speak, the slang said to originate in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, is the source of the word "like" being used in most sentences spoken by many young Americans. Moon Unit moves on to become a comedian, writer and actor.
