"The Swedish Sphinx"
Movie star Greta Garbo is born in Stockholm, Sweden. She appears in 27 films, including most notably the 1930s movies of Anna Karenina, Grand Hotel, and Camille. With her extreme desire for privacy, Garbo's aloofness becomes the stuff of legend—"I want to be alone." (She actually utters a slight variation of that, "I want to be let alone.") At 36, the enigmatic actress retires from film. She receives her American citizenship in 1951, and dies in 1990 in New York at the age of 84.
