From tragedy to triumph
Lev Nikolayevich, Count Tolstoy, known today simply as Leo Tolstoy, is born August 28 [September 9, New Style], 1828 at his family’s estate south of Moscow, Russia. By age 13, he suffers the death of both parents and two subsequent guardians, and he accomplishes little more than drinking and gambling in his twenties. He begins to publish stories in the 1850s, and in the 1860s he writes what is now regarded as perhaps the greatest novel in history, War and Peace (1869). It is followed by another masterpiece, Anna Karenina (1873-1877). Tolstoy dies in 1910.
