The South Rises Again (well, part of it)
The wreck of the H.L. Hunley is raised from Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. On February 17, 1864, the 7.5-ton Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley was the first submarine to engage and sink a warship when it spar-torpedoed the 1,240-ton USS Housatonic. Mission accomplished, Hunley sank on her return to shore, claiming all eight aboard. She is rediscovered in 1995, after a 14-year search. Today researchers are studying Hunley's technology to learn more about 19th century naval innovation.
