Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle is born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the second of 10 children. He studies medicine and is knighted in 1902 for his work in a field hospital during the Boer War, but is best known for creating one of literature's most familiar characters, the coldly perceptive Detective Sherlock Holmes. Doyle is also a strong promoter of spiritualism, and several groups attempt to contact his spirit through séances after his death in July 1930.
