Separate is not equal
Supreme Court rules to end state-sanctioned segregation in public schools in the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. In a unanimous decision, the court declares segregation unconstitutional and in violation of the Equal Protection and Due Process of the Fourteenth Amendment. The following year the Court orders desegregation of all schools.
