The first Academy Awards ceremony is held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on May 16, 1929, when movies had only just begun to talk. Two hundred and seventy people attend, but no one anxiously awaits the results, as the winners were announced to the press three months earlier. Wings wins for best picture, while Emil Jannings and Janet Gaynor take the best actor and actress awards.
