Captain Arthur Phillip departs Portsmouth, England with eleven ships, six of them loaded with convicts, headed for Australia to establish a penal colony. The first ship reaches Botany Bay some eight months later on January 18, 1788. Deciding the location is not suitable to found a colony they head to Port Jackson and arrive at Sydney Cove on January 26. The arrival of a second fleet in 1790 ensures the colony's survival.
