Nuclear Accident at Three-Mile Island
The nation's worst nuclear accident starts at 4:00 a.m. when a failure in water pumps at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear power plant causes the reactor to overheat. The plant experiences a severe core meltdown. Although small amounts of radioactive gases were recorded in the area, there are no deaths or injuries. The incident leads to an upgrade of plant safety and emergency preparedness.
