The Exxon Valdez Runs Aground
The nation's worst oil spill dumps 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound, a waterway known for its marine life. The spill reaches locations 470 miles away. More than four summers and $2.1 billion are spent before the cleanup effort is called off, though some beaches are still oily. It is believed to be the most environmentally damaging spill in the world.
