March 20, 1965
March for a Basic Right
President Lyndon Johnson informs Alabama Governor George Wallace that he will call up the Alabama National Guard to supervise a planned voting-rights march from Selma to Montgomery. On March 7th, state and local police had brutalized participants during a similar march. On March 25th, Martin Luther King, Jr. and 50,000 marchers arrive safely in Montgomery. Five months later Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act into law.
