First Telephone Call
Alexander Graham Bell successfully transmits his voice over his newly invented apparatus, the telephone, to his assistant, Thomas Watson, in Boston. Located in a separate room behind closed doors, Watson hears Bell say, "Mr. Watson—come here—I want to see you." Bell will publicly demonstrate his telephone later that year on June 25 at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
