Bloody Sunday
Some 600 people on a Montgomery, Alabama-bound march for African-American voting rights are brutally assaulted after crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the outskirts of Selma. A full-scale, court-protected Selma-to-Montgomery march happens at the end of March, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is signed later in the year.
