Man of Letters
Poet, writer and playwright Langston Hughes, famous for writing about black American life, was born in Joplin, Missouri. Hughes' signature poem The Negro Speaks of Rivers, written the summer after high school, helped launch a career closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Hughes dies at age 65 on May 22, 1967.
