The United States of America was born in April 1775, with the shots heard 'round the world from Lexington and Concord. Or it was born in July 1776, with the signing of the Declaration Independence in Philadelphia. Or it was born in the winter of 1787, when a 35-year-old Virginia legislator holed up at his estate and undertook a massive study of governmental systems around the world and over the ages.
The legislator was James Madison, and it was through his winter's labor that he devised a system of checks and balances that would be enshrined in the Constitution of the United States that fall. Madison's estate, Montpelier, proved less durable than his ideas, but now, after a five-year, $24 million restoration, it has been reopened to visitors.
"Madison is back, and he's getting the recognition he deserves," says Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which owns Montpelier. It may seem odd to think of Madison as being "back"—in addition to becoming known as the "father of the Constitution," he also served as Thomas Jefferson's secretary of state (1801-1809) and won two presidential terms of his own (1809-1817)—but then, he was overshadowed in his own time by his good friend Jefferson and the father of the country, George Washington.
"Without Washington, we wouldn't have won the revolution. Without Jefferson, the nation wouldn't have been inspired," says Michael Quinn, president of the Montpelier Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting Madison's legacy. "What made our revolution complete was the genius of Madison.... He formed the ideals of the nation."
Montpelier, which lies a few miles south of Orange, Virginia, and about 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., is where Madison grew up and where he retired after his days as president were over. His grandparents had settled the estate in the early 1730s, and a few years after the future president was born, in 1751, his father began building the house where he would live.
Although Madison repeatedly left central Virginia—he graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), for example, and sat in the Virginia House of Delegates in Williamsburg and Richmond; he lived in Washington for almost the first two decades of the 19th century—he always returned to Montpelier.
In the late 1790s, he added several rooms to the relatively modest house his father had built, and during his first term as president he added wings to each side, creating a more stately home that matched his position. Once his days in Washington were done, Madison spent his years overseeing the plantation at Montpelier, growing wheat and tobacco and raising livestock.
He died there in 1836, at age 85, the last of the founding fathers to pass away.
In the summer of 2005, I discovered Montpelier as I was driving by, on my way back from the Boy Scout National Jamboree. I don't know that I had ever heard of it before, but I was fascinated by the movie about the house and the renovations, and the work going on. I tried out the audio casettes provided, and roamed all over the immediate property. I wanted to visit the cemetary that was q quarter of a mile walk, but, I'll have to confess, I was just too tired to do any more walking, and had many miles to go before I slept. I had just spent more than two exhausting weeks as a volunteer at the Jamboree. I have promised myself that I will go back to see the final result. One thing I especially remember is seeing a couple of grave markers a long way across the property, and after walking laboriously over there, discovering that a couple of race horses were buried there. The first time i visited Montpelier,the DuPont horse room was still attached. I was impressed with the progress made when I revisited again in 2006. I hope to see it again when it is restored. I believe that will be a monumental challenge because so much of Madison's property is missing, especially the library.

I was introduced to Montpelier several years ago, before the restoration began. Since then, my wife and I have made an annual pilgrimage to see the continuing restoration of the mansion. During that time, I have studied Mr. Madison's change of mind about a Bill of Rights and his brilliant political maneuvering in the first Congress to get a Bill of Rights passed and submittted to the states. Truly, a remarkable couple, the Madisons, and justly deserving of the new historical attention finalliy being paid to him.

That is an interesting comment about the horses being buried on the grounds. Do you know when they were buried or who they belonged to? The reason is that during that time that Montpelier was build, horse skulls were a semblance of "good luck" and protecter against evil (thus the evolving of the lucky horseshoe) in England and Wales. Many times, horse skulls were embedded in the walls of a house. How lucky we are to get to see this restored piece of our history.

The horses buried on the propety, I believe just to the left of the Mansion, belonged to Marion duPont. She was an avid rider and trainer, and built the barns and track that still are there today. She started the annual Montpelier Races which are still a tradition today. I lived on the estate in one of the many rental houses, and owned one of her lead sled vehicles.

i love what John G. Roberts said.He is right. America is a monument. To not only our Founding Fathers, but to each and every man, woman, and child who helps it. Anyone who works to make it a better place deserves a monument and they get the chance to see America thrive on their efforts.
