A robot filmgoers could warm to
One day while George Lucas was finishing production on American Graffiti, the sound designer, Walter Murch, called for “R2-D2”—film lingo for “Reel 2, Dialogue 2.” “R2-D2!” said Lucas, who was already writing Star Wars. “What a great name.” Some of the R2-D2s in the movie series were remote-controlled models. This one, from Return of the Jedi, was a costume worn by actor Kenny Baker.
