I have lived in several communities in the United States but have never encountered the hometown feeling of Oakwood, Ohio, a suburb that borders Dayton. The feeling of community, and the beauty of the homes is unmatched, and affordable. You really feel the sense of community in the fall and spring, when hundreds of parents walk their children to one of the two elementary schools, and talk about their kids, or the days events. Very few parents drive their kids, and their is no school transportation. Oakwood was also the home of the Orville Wright for most of his adult life, and his mansion on Hawthorn Hill is now part of a national historic park. A visit to the Wright Memorial Public Library is a must. Look at the plaque, inside the front door, and you will see the names of the town's committee members who got the library built in 1939. When you see, "Vice-President Orville Wright," and consider the man's accomplishments, you realize how proud you are to have been a part of Oakwood, and can say that it was your hometown.

What a nice thing to see on the internet, my home town! When I lived there, parents most certainly didn't walk their chidren to school! That was interesting to hear....our town was considered so safe that we could walk home from a friend's house even after dark at ages 12, 13,14 or so. This was a great feeling; people were not afraid, and I don't recall seeing any instances of crime against kids because of it! We had a great "Y", before its beautification, it was wonderful to hang out with friends there, playing ping png and listening to music. Other memories - the wonderful bakery on Park Ave., our "buckeye" trees with kids hanging off the branches trying to get buckeyes, the dances at school, our neighborhood bike parades on 4th of July, selling lemonade in our front yards in summer. I could go on and on. I now live far from "home" and feel so nostalgic about the beauiful town of Oakwood!
