One custom you learn quickly in Lindsborg is to wave to everyone, whether you know them or not. You wave because they will be waving to you. And smiling. Genuine place, the ‘Borg. Located in the Smoky Valley and settled by Swedish immigrants, who felt deeply about religion, art, music and education. It has been said Lindsborg is where culture and agriculture meet. Lindsborg has the longest running Handel’s Messiah in North America of 130 years, the longest enduring outdoor theatre in Kansas, a City Band, working artist studios, a heritage museum and many art galleries. Children are taught Swedish folk dancing from the first grade. Anatoly Karpov, Russian chess grandmaster and former World Champion, opened his one and only U.S. Chess School here. World renowned artist Birger Sandzén taught until his retirement at Bethany College. Lindsborg has the only U.S. Dala horse factory and the artists still hand paint each horse sign. All the shops are locally owned. The hardware store is still on Main Street. As well as the wine shop, flower shop, ice cream parlor, artisan coffee roastery, restaurants and even a clock repair shop. The coffee shop does not have a drive through. In keeping with our Swedish-ness, most shop owners and locals gather twice a day for fika (coffee break). The pharmacy is called the Apotek; the library the Bibliotek; the local pub, the Öl Stuga. Lindsborg encapsulates true hospitality with a friendliness that is rarely matched and is “everyone’s kind of town.”
