Augusta, Me.

I've lived in many places up and down the East from Maine to Florida and several foreign countries. When it comes to "My Kind of Town" there's only one spot in my heart and that's Augusta Maine. As a child I lived at 5 Lincoln Street right across from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Augusta is Maine's capital. It's people make it my kind of town. Believe it or not there are actually places where their word and a handshake is more important than terms and conditions drafted by the most skilled lawyer and witnessed by twenty cardinals. Common sense, pride in themselves, and making their word as their bond describes the people I encountered when I lived there. It may sound trite, but Mom, Apple Pie, and baseball are those wonderful memories I remember.
My Dad is retired FBI and it wasn't uncommon to attend gatherings where the president of the local bank was friends with Ed the plumber who all knew each other, were friends, and not shackled with the protocol and facade of social status pecking order one finds in other cities and towns. Don't forget the French Acadians either.
Harsh winters freezing cold are always a challenge but there's nothing like spending a leisurely Sunday afternoon with a backpack holding a thermos bottle of hot coffee or hot chocolate skating for hours on the frozen lakes. Then there's the wonderful summer months with the swimming rule of "When you're lips turn purple" it's time to get out of the water. There's plenty of places, but none like Augusta!

Nice place, Augusta. Question: how do residents treat newcomers, people 'from away," as Mainers like to say? Friendly? Cold? Reserved?
