Smithsonian Magazine Article Submissions

If you are not a professional freelance-writer, but a reader who wants to suggest a story topic click here.

Smithsonian magazine accepts unsolicited proposals from established freelance writers for features and some departments. This web submission form has been developed to give you the most direct and timely access to the editors of the magazine. It also allows you to provide all of the basic information we need to make an initial determination about your proposal and about you as a writer. This form is now the only means by which we can receive and evaluate story proposals and should be used in place of both postal mail and email submissions.

Please read the Writer's Guidelines before submitting the form below. Once you click "Submit" you will receive an automated email response letting you know that your submission has been received. You will receive an answer to your proposal by email within four weeks.

Please DO NOT submit your query under more than one subject area or department at a time.
