WRITER'S GUIDELINES
General Writer's Guidelines
Please read our Writer's Guidelines to answer questions such as: what are you looking for, what should I include in my query, what is your lead-time, what do you pay, etc?
Q. Why have you switched to the web submission form?
A. Smithsonian magazine receives an extremely large number of unsolicited proposals. This form ensures that we get exactly the information we need to make an initial decision about your suggestion and it enables you to get a timely, thorough review.
Q. Do I have to be a professional freelance writer to submit a query?
A. While we are always on the lookout for writers who are new to us, it is recommended that you possess a body of published work.
Q. Can I still send an unsolicited proposal by email or by postal mail?
A. No. This web form is now the only way that we can accept unsolicited submissions.
Q. What will happen if I send a proposal to the email address I used the last time I sent you one?
A. That email address is no longer used to accept proposals. You will be sent an automatic reply directing you to the web form.
Q. What if one of your editors has asked me to send clips or additional materials by mail or email?
A. Send the materials to the editor as he/she has directed. Be sure to include a note indicating that you are sending the material "as requested."
Q. What should I do if my proposal fits into more than one subject area or department?
A. The subject area/department you select is simply to assist us in directing your proposal. Each submission is read carefully before being forwarded to the appropriate editor. Please DO NOT send your proposal multiple times.
Q. My manuscript is more than 10,000 characters and won't fit in your submission box. What should I do?
A. Only those submitting to the Last Page humor column should be sending manuscripts. The text box provides ample room for these 550 - 700 word pieces. We rarely commission completed manuscripts for features since specific editorial needs and requirements (including length and focus of the piece) are discussed by the commissioning editor and the writer during the contract process.
Q. How do I check on the status of a previous submission?
A. It may take up to 6-8 weeks to receive a response. If you sent a proposal using the web submission form and have not received a response after 8 weeks, please contact us via our Feedback Form, www.smithsonianmag.com/contact-us/feedback/. Please include your name, phone number, and "Submission Status" in the comments box.
