Gold Digging
Vani, in modern-day Georgia, was a rich metropolis between the 6th and 1st centuries B.C. The lavish contents (such as this gold necklace) of a gravesite excavated in 2004 are at the Sackler through February 24.
Spanish Influence
From the War of Independence to the war with Mexico, Spain played a key role in U.S. history. The Portrait Gallery displays 72 portraits (Goya's Carlos IV) and documents from 1763-1848 through February 10.
Arts and Aircrafts
The exhaust pipe of a McDonnell F-4S Phantom II jet gazes cross-eyed, thanks to Air and Space Museum photographer Carolyn Russo. More of her aeronautical photos are at the museum through January 27.
Private Screenings
During Japan's Edo period (1615-1868), the country secluded itself from the rest of the world and creative arts flourished. More than 100 hanging scrolls (Tiger, 1755), screens and fans, which are part of the private Etsuko and Joe Price Collection of Corona del Mar, California, are on display at the Sackler through April 13.
Apocalypse Now
John Alexander's 10-by-22-foot painting I've Been Living in a Hydrogen Bomb (1982) evokes the trauma of a nuclear attack. His powerful works are at American Art through March 16.
