This is a breath taking sight to see, From Calif. This picture seems impossible to imagine, Waves frozen, I have seen drifts that were aqua in color and a frozen tree, that looked like diamonds in the sun light embedded in my mind from years back on a trip to Tenn.

The beautiful photograph evokes wonderful memories of 25 years spent working in Racine, sailing on Lake Michigan and recalling that Lake Michigan did not feel significantly warmer on July 4th than it appears in the photo.

In 1953 Lake Michigan froze much like this. I was there at dawn that morning, midwinter. It looked like crystallized diamonds on the surface of the Lake as far as I could see, very beautiful. A wave had frozen over the pavement at Loyola College that was as clear as glass.

Love the pictures ---love Smithsonian

Nature is so beautiful and testing. I just can't wait until the season's thaw to find my car.

I know that scene all too well. When Spring hits I will find my car.
