I was also curious if you have any favorite new singers. What do you think of modern music?
I don't listen to radio. I play my own CDs from my collection. I've got Tanya Tucker, Garth Brooks, Brooks and Dunn, Reba McIntire, of the new people. Of course I still listen a lot to Hank Thompson, my mentor who passed away last year. I've always just loved all kinds of music. Today's music, I just can't relate to it. It's just not my generation's music. That doesn't mean it's bad. It's just not my taste.
When you were starting out was a special time. Can you describe the atmosphere when you were developing this new kind of music?
As a 17-year-old, I didn't know that I really should remember all this. I was just kind of in a new world every day. They were my friends and my buddies and it was always a bunch of laughter going on. In the early days my dad was with me. He was a big kidder and Elvis was too. Johnny Cash was real shy. Then the other ones were normal. We had a lot of friends. It was so much fun really just working those 10-day or 14-day tours where you are working almost every night and you drive caravan style. Sometimes one of the band members would ride with me and dad. But I was never allowed to hang around backstage with just the guys. My dad kept me on a short leash.
In the documentary, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello and other musicians pay tribute to you.
Not too shabby, right? The film not only showcases my life but provides the whole scope of the 1950s rockabilly, rock 'n' roll era. My complaint is the title, "The Sweet Lady With the Nasty Voice." I'm not sure that's right, because I'm not sure I'm a sweet lady at all.

My dad was a huge Fan of Wanda Jackson so much so he named me after her. My mom loved her too. Thanks I really love my name and folks that I meet always say I leave a lasting impression in a good way.

So glad you've done a retrospective on Wanda Jackson. I'm 67 and have been a fan for about 50 years. Three years ago, I was baling hay when "Lets Have a Party" came on the radio. I almost fell off the tractor, trying to dance and drive at the same time. It is a crime that she is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So many of the old greats are not and that should be looked into. I've come to think that the wrong people are in control of the "Hall."

I have had several encounters with Wanda Jackson. I remember as a little kid growing up in Oklahoma City, people at my school said Wanda Jackson was going to have lunch with us. Little did I know that one of my friends mother was someone famous. She just seemed like every other mother of the kids in my class but it is an event in my life that I will never forget. During my senior year in high school, I attended a church in Del City, OK and come to find out, Wanda attended there also with her family. Now Wanda attends another church in Oklahoma City and it happens to be the same as where my parents attend. I am glad she has blessed our world with her music and may the Lord bless her even more in the future than He has in the past.

Wanda is one of the greatest Oklahoma singers we have ever had! She was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2000 and hopefully will be inducted into the Rock and Roll music hall of fame in the near future. Not only is she a great singer, she is such a kind woman. True to her "Oklahoma Roots". You can come to the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (located in Muskogee, Oklahoma) and see and hear more about her great singing career. She is truely one of the great Rock and Roller's. Gp to the website of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (www.omhof.com) and find out more about this great lady. We are so proud of her and her wonderful career! I grew up on old country music thanks to my parents and I still listen to it today. I'm 43 years old and would rather listen to that kind of music than what is being played now. My Daddy, Vernon Lottes, who is 81 years old, first introduced me to Wanda Jackson songs, and I've been hooked ever since. She has an amazing voice.

What a great interview! The first time I heard Wanda Jackson, I was at the Country Music Hall of Fame a couple of years ago. There was a video of her playing, and it stopped me in my tracks. The voice, the looks, the attitude! From a woman at the time! It was phenomenal. I just got her greatest hits and it amazing! It's good to see she's finally getting her due!

I was very surprised to see an article about Wanda Jackson. I am the Library Media Specialist at Maud Schools. We have a street named Wanda Jackson. It seems that Maud is the birthplace of Wanda Jackson. I'm sure that many of our young people are not aware of Mrs. Jackson's mark on music history. I plan to highlight the article and send students to your web site for a quick history read. Thanks, Brenda Harlin

Germany also appreciated Wanda Jackson. I have a 33 rpm lp on which she sings entirely in German. Her Oklahoma accent just works beautifully on lushly produced tracks. I still enjoy it. Thanks for acknowledging this wonderful entertainer.

AN old friend of mine, Jody Schroeder, who has now passed away, was I think the first president of the Oklahoma City chapter of the Wanda Jackson fan group, and a friend of Wanda's. Jody would be very pleased to see Wanda come to such national attention.
