Does anyone know if Woody Guthrie ever visited or wrote anything about Timberline Lodge, a WPA project, during his visit to the Northwest and Bonneville Dam?

After reading: "Woody, Cisco, and Me. Seaman three in the Merchant Marine" By Jim Longhi, and finding out that after Woody returned to New York, the FBI were there to take his Seamens papers away because he had written an article for a Communist newspaper, I was wondering if Woody, Longhi, and Cisco, could still be eligable for WWll Veterans benefits as many mariners who sailed in war zones were.

Please, please, please don't forget Ramblin' Jack Elliot. He was Woodie's sidekick, and was an early Guthrie collaborator, or imitator in the beginning, just like Bob Dylan was Elliot's sidekick and immitator in his formative period.

One of my favorite singer/songwriter's is Ellis Paul. I absolutely love his cover from the Guthrie Collection, "God's Promise!" I request it at every concert of his I go to.

Barbara, You are correct, but the proper title of the Janis Ian/Woody Guthrie collaboration is "I Hear You Sing Again" and it can be found on Ian's "Billie's Bones" CD. Beautiful composition and interpretation.

One of the most beautiful songs I have heard recently was a collaboration between Woody's Lyrics and Janis Ian's melody, culminating in, "Mother Sing Again", which can be found at www.JanisIan.com in her lyrics list. Janis was very honored to be asked to write with Woody, and did him proud.

I'm wondering if Mr. Gutherie appeared in performance during his tour of the Northwest for the Grand Coulee Dam project. It would seem if there wasn't an actual scheduled formal appearance that he might have played for the workers at the construction site. I have read that he refused to play for the Chamber of Commerce. Can anyone confirm?

I was honestly skeptical about buying Jonatha Brook's new album, The Works. The whole Woody Guthrie idea didn't really appeal to me. I'm more of a Jonatha-as-Inconsolable sort of fan. What a surprise! Every song is so beautiful that I had to check the liner notes. "Hold on a minute," I thought "this was supposed to be a bunch of 'This Land is Your Land' makeovers!" If you can listen to Sweet and Bitter Bowl without getting the shivers, you're a better man than me! Kudos to Nora Guthrie and Jonatha Brooke for giving Woody Guthrie's work a whole new wonderful life.
