Santa the Arsonist

(Ralph Fabri to Dale Pontius, 1939. Dale Pontius papers relating to Ralph Fabri, 1935-1974. Archives of American Art.)

Santa the Arsonist

Hungarian-born artist Ralph Fabri gave this frightening print of Santa sitting on an asteroid, fist under chin, like Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker,” to his friend Dale Pontius for Christmas in 1939. Looking down at a fiery Earth, Santa doesn’t seem to be thinking happy thoughts. Fabri signed the print “with apologies to Rodin.”

Would you have nightmares if he fell down your chimney? Vote for this scary Santa!

The "two young monkeys" aren't monkeys - they're chimpanzees, which are apes.

Rodin's the "Thinker Santa" watching the european part of the globe burning; was depicting the coming of Hitler's Nazis and WWII. Now that would be my vote for "Scariest Santa."

Would Santa really whip his poor reindeer? eeew, Cruelty-to-Animals-Santa!

I love this. It's beautiful. I'd frame it and hang it up in my house! The black cat seals the deal. Yep. It gets my vote.

Santa does not seem to be up to any good

Santa appears as a circus clown holding an olive branch of peace. Clearly a man to like. Lots of fun in that smile.

If this guy showed up at my front door it would creep me out.
