Joelle Linhoff, winner of our 4th Annual Photo Contest, spent three days on a hill overlooking a New Zealand pasture before she snapped the photo that would net her the grand prize. "I just took as many photos as I could," she says, "using as much film as I had brought. I allotted one whole roll of film to the pasture."

What a joy! In the media overloaded existence in which we each live, the wonderous experience of seeing for one's self is available in every photograph. What the photographer aimed to capture, is supplied in the comments and indicate or allude to the photographer's life experience and inclinations. What I see, remember or acknowledge as lost are mine and mine alone...to accompany me through all the moments of cognition that remain in my life. Thank you for the gift.

One of your winners is a fantastic photograph of Austin's 4th of July fireworks -- except I think it's in the wrong category! It won in the Americana category but it would seem to belong in "Altered Images"! I'm a little behind in my reading, and as it just so happened, the day before I read this issue of Smithsonian, I had been on a website that was essentially a workshop on how to create stunning composite images using multiple shots of the same scene -- an "HDR Tutorial" -- and this exact photo was the example that was used . . .
