Community Catalyst Rules

THE DOW COMMUNITY CATALYST CONTEST OFFICIAL RULES
NO PURCHASE OR OBLIGATION NECESSARY.
A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING
VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW.

1. HOW TO ENTER: Contest begins 12:01 AM (ET) October 1, 2007 and ends 11:59 PM (ET) December 1, 2007 ("entry period"). The purpose of this contest is to acknowledge individuals who are catalysts in their communities. To nominate a person, tell us in 250 words or less what that person has done to improve his/her community and the lives of the people in that community and why he/she deserves to win. You may nominate yourself. The prize will be awarded to the selected nominee, not the entrant (except in the case of winning self-nominations). You may enter one of two ways: Online: During the entry period log on to www.smithsonian.com/catalyst follow the links, complete the online entry registration form then click to submit. Offline: Print or type your complete name, address, phone number, age, optional e-mail address and your nominee’s name and complete address on a plain piece of paper and send it with your nomination essay to: Dow Community Catalyst Contest, 420 Lexington Avenue, Suite 2335, New York, NY 10170. You may submit only one entry regardless of method of entry. Mailed entries must be postmarked by 12/1/07 and received by 12/10/07. Use of automated entry software is prohibited. All entries received become the property of the Sponsors and will not be acknowledged or returned.

2. ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to all legal residents of the United States 21 years of age or older at time of entry, except employees and trustees of the Smithsonian Institution and The Dow Chemical Company and their respective subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotion agencies (and members of their families and households). Individuals who write professionally (earn more than 50% of their income from writing) are not eligible. Contest is subject to all applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. Void where prohibited by law. By entering this contest, each entrant grants to Sponsors all rights, including copyright, title, and interest in his/her submission. Each entrant warrants and represents that the submission is his/her original work, has not been previously published or won a prize, and does not infringe the copyright, privacy, or other proprietary rights of any third party.

3. JUDGING: A judging panel selected by Sponsors will judge submissions based upon the following criteria: the contribution that the nominee has made to improve his/her community and the lives of the people in that community, level of innovative thinking involved in creating the element of change/contribution, level of sustainability (is this a program/project that is renewable and/or evergreen?), level that the individual's work inspires others and galvanizes the community towards positive change. Once the judging panel selects finalists, it will require contact information for two references to support the nomination.

Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify any entry that, in their opinion, refers, depicts or in any way reflects negatively upon the Sponsors or any other person or entity, or that violates these rules. Sponsors reserve the right to reproduce, alter, or amend entries for purposes of advertising and trade. However, Sponsors are not obligated to make any use of the winning submissions.

4. NOTIFICATION: Winner will be selected by or about January 15, 2008 and will be notified by February 1, 2008. The winner and the entrant who nominated him/her will be contacted by phone and/or mail and sent a written notification letter along with an Affidavit of Eligibility/Release, and Publicity Release, granting Sponsors permission to use his/her name, address, likeness, and/or prize information for advertising and promotional purposes in any media without further compensation, except where prohibited agreeing to waive any and all claims against the Sponsors, their affiliates, employees, agents and representatives for personal injury or loss, which may occur from the receipt or use of the prize. The winner will be requested to supply Sponsors with a photograph of him/herself, and agree that Sponsor may use and reproduce such photograph in any medium and in any manner whatsoever. Affidavits and releases must be completed and returned within 14 days. If a chosen winner does not return the release and confirm acceptance within 14 days, the prize will be forfeited and awarded to the first alternate winner.

5. PRIZES: (1) Grand Prize: One $1000.00 Cash Prize will be awarded No substitution or transfer of prize permitted. Taxes, if any, are the responsibility of each winner.

6. GENERAL CONDITIONS: Sponsors are not responsible for printing or typographical errors in any contest related materials, stolen, lost, late, misdirected, damaged, incomplete or illegible entries. Sponsors, and their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and Internet access providers are not responsible for incorrect entry of information by entrants, or technical malfunctions of any telephone network, computer equipment, software or any combination thereof, entry materials that have been tampered with, human error, or lost/delayed data transmission; transactions that are processed late, incorrectly or lost due to computer or electronic malfunction. By entering this contest, entrants agree to waive any and all claims against the Sponsors and their respective affiliates, employees, agents and representatives for personal injury or loss, which may occur from participation in the contest. In the event of a dispute over the identity of an Internet entrant, entry will be deemed submitted by the holder of the e-mail account at time of entry. Entry materials that have been tampered with or altered are void. No copies, facsimiles or reproductions of online entry form will be accepted. Proof of emailing does not constitute proof of delivery.

If judges determine in their sole discretion that there is any suspected or actual electronic tampering with the contest, or if technical difficulties compromise the integrity of the contest, the Sponsors, at their sole discretion, reserve the right to void any entries submitted fraudulently or cancel or modify the contest. Should the contest be terminated prior to the stated expiration date, notice will be posted on www.smithsonian.com/catalyst. Any attempt by an entrant or any other individual to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of the contest is in violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, the

Sponsors reserve the right to seek damages and other remedies from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Sponsors reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to cancel this contest if it becomes technically corrupted such that it cannot be conducted as originally planned and select winners from among all eligible entries received by this termination date.

All entries received will be shared with the Administrator for the sole purpose of selecting and notifying winner.

7. WINNERS INFORMATION: For a list of winner send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Dow Community Catalyst Contest, 420 Lexington Avenue, Suite 2335, New York, N.Y. 10170 by 12/1/07.
